Chandigarh: “A counselor plays a very important role in shaping the future of each child. I am so proud that I have got this opportunity to serve the society. Whenever I counsel a child I ensure that he considers me like his mother only, “says Sunita Kapoor, a Counsellor at Government Modle Senior Secondary School, Sector 40 B Chandigarh who would be honored on teacher’s day for dedicating 27 years as a counselor in city schools.
Sharing her happiness for getting State award by UT Administrator on Tuesday, she said that in past 27 years, she had worked in almost every government school including urban and periphery.
Commenting as how she feels whenever any of her counseled children recover from her problems, she says, “Certainly it’s a matter of proud to see that the child counseled by you recovers from the stress he was suffering from. In my 27 year career, I have counseled thousands of children, who are now placed at some big positions.”
“My counseling is not limited to classes only, whenever I see any child sad in any public area, for instance whenever I go to Sukhna lake and see any child sad and depressed, I immediately sit with him and start counseling,” says Sunita.
Recalling one of her best moments, Sunita said, “It was in 2007 when there was an unprivileged child, who was in stress as he wanted to study but didn’t have money. At that time I helped the child with books and even gave him food so that he can complete his study. H e used to study under street light; I even helped him to get the electrical connection in this room, where he was staying. Now, whenever he comes and meet me I really feel proud that how my little helped secured his future as he is now posted at a high position in an IT company.”
Sunita, was a scholar student since the starting of her academic career. Studied from MCM, DAV College Chandigarh, Dev Samaj College Chandigarh, Sunita was a brilliant student and always remained active in various social activities. She was also the only one who had represented the city beautiful in NCERT’s counselors' training held in 2007.
“Being counselors is not an easy job, you have to face many challenges to make the students to trust you and once you do that there is no looking back. So I would advise that the first step towards becoming a good counselor is learning the art of being a good counselor,” says Sunita.
Sharing
her future plans, Sunita says that though she still has seven years of
service she has already decided that whenever she will retire she is
going to give private counseling.
