Senior Congress leader and former Punjab health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu has sharply criticised the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) for issuing notices to plot holders in Sectors 76–80, Mohali, with a demand of an additional INR 3,164 per square metre as an enhanced cost. Sidhu described GMADA’s demand as “arbitrary, unjustified and baseless” and said it has caused widespread resentment among affected allottees.

Sidhu said the plots were originally allotted in 2000 at rates of INR 3,300–3,350 per square yard, with possession expected in 2002. Due to administrative lapses and litigation, possession was delayed by more than a decade, and allottees only received it between 2013 and 2019. Sidhu argued that the authority’s decision to recover the enhanced price with interest in 2023, citing a 2013 Supreme Court judgement, unfairly penalises buyers for delays that were not their fault.

Sidhu also accused local MLA Kulwant Singh of misleading residents by promising a partial reduction of INR 839 per square metre and Cabinet approval for concessions, calling it a “false consolation.” He emphasised that the notices clearly state the requirement to pay the full INR 3,164 per square metre and demanded their immediate withdrawal.

Officials said that the controversy comes amid wider government discussions on reducing enhancement charges for these sectors to ease the financial burden on allottees.
