Fraudsters forced him to transfer rupees 07 crore into various accounts.
S. P. Oswal digital arrest case: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Jalandhar Zonal Office, has arrested Rumi Kalita in connection with the digital arrest case of S. P. Oswal, an eminent industrialist of Ludhiana, Punjab.
The ED conducted search operations on 22 December 2025 at 11 locations across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Assam under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in connection with the case, the agency said in a press release issued on 25 December.
During the search operations, the ED recovered and seized various incriminating documents and digital devices.
According to the agency, the investigation was initiated based on an FIR registered by the Cyber Crime Police Station, Ludhiana, under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Subsequently, nine more FIRs registered by various police authorities regarding cybercrime and digital arrest related to the same group of criminals were also taken up in the same investigation.
The investigation revealed that during the digital arrest of S. P. Oswal, fraudsters impersonating officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), using forged official and judicial documents, forced him to transfer rupees 07 crore into various accounts. Out of this amount, rupees 5.24 crore were recovered from the accounts and transferred back, the ED said.
The agency stated that the remaining funds were transferred to various "mule accounts" maintained in the names of different entities and persons, including labourers and delivery boys, from where the money was either further diverted or withdrawn in cash immediately.
It was also found during the investigation that the amounts cheated from victims were immediately diverted by a group of persons through various mule accounts, and the credentials of these accounts were used by Rumi Kalita in lieu of a certain percentage of the cheated money as her share.
“Various incriminating evidence gathered during the search shows that she was deeply involved in diversion and layering of Proceeds of Crime,” the ED said.
Following these findings, Rumi Kalita was arrested under the provisions of the PMLA on 23 December. Her transit remand was granted by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Kamrup, Guwahati, for four days. She was subsequently produced before the Special Court under the PMLA in Jalandhar, which granted ED custody of the accused for 10 days up to 02 January 2026.
Earlier, searches were conducted on 31 January 2025 in the case, which resulted in the recovery and seizure of incriminating documents.
Further investigation is underway.
