Punjab Cabinet Approves Record Rs 68.5/Qtl Subsidy; SAP remains Highest in Country
The Punjab Cabinet on Tuesday approved a direct subsidy of INR 68.5 per quintal for sugarcane growers for the 2025-26 crushing season. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, solidified Punjab’s status as the state offering the highest sugarcane compensation in India, with the State Agreed Price (SAP) fixed at INR 416 per quintal.
According to the report, this subsidy will be paid directly to farmers on behalf of private sugar mills, ensuring immediate financial relief.
The Cabinet approved several major public welfare initiatives, including the creation of 1,000 additional posts for yoga trainers under the 'CM di Yogshala' project with an outlay of INR 35 crore.
In a move to overhaul healthcare, the Cabinet also approved the transfer of civil hospitals in Muktsar, Tarn Taran, Jalalabad, and Fazilka to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) for better diagnostic and treatment services.
In its development agenda, the Cabinet also approved a new policy for the sale or exchange of abandoned paths within municipal limits and extended the deadline for Punjab Affordable Property Registration Act (PAPRA) licensed projects until December 31, 2026.
Additionally, a collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was approved to introduce advanced Japanese technology into Punjab’s horticulture sector, aimed at doubling its share in the state's economy.
