The crackdown follows directions from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to make Punjab a gangster-free state.

Operation Prahar: Punjab’s 12,000 Cops to Raid 60 Gangsters and 1,200 Associates

The Punjab Police on Tuesday launched ‘Operation Prahar’ in a major statewide initiative against organised crime. According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, this intensive operation involves 12,000 police personnel focused on eradicating the ecosystem of gangsters operating both within the state and from foreign land.

The DGP said that the operation is focused on disrupting the entire support chain of criminal networks, including their safe houses, weapon supply routes, and financial structures. 

Yadav emphasised that the force is targeting not just the perpetrators but also the individuals providing logistical and financial aid to gangsters. Special focus is being placed on tracking money laundering and the properties acquired through criminal proceeds.

According to the report, senior police officers, including CPs and SSPs, are leading the field operations.

The crackdown follows directions from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to make Punjab a gangster-free state. 

A new Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) has been established, headed by IG Ashish Choudhary, to strengthen the crackdown on fugitives.

The DGP also warned of strict internal accountability and said that any police official found assisting criminals would be treated as a gangster.

Furthermore, an INR 500 crore plan is underway to upgrade state jails with advanced security and jammers.
