Punjab's ‘Chitta’ Tragedy: Mother of 6 Lost Sons Questions Govt’s Anti-Drug Campaign
In a heart-wrenching event, the devastating impact of chitta in Punjab once again came to light when a mother from the Sherewal family reportedly lost all six of her sons to drug addiction over the last decade.
The latest tragedy struck with the death of her youngest son, 20-year-old Jasvir Singh, whose body was discovered on a canal bank recently due to an alleged overdose.
Shinder Kaur shared her "unimaginable loss" on Monday and questioned the effectiveness of the state government’s ‘Yudh Nashe Virudh’ campaign.
Her ordeal began in 2013 with the death of her eldest son, Kulwant Singh (34). This was followed by the deaths of Gurdeep Singh (March 2021), Jaswant Singh (July 2021), Raju Singh (January 2022), and Baljeet Singh (March 2023). Her husband, Mukhtyar Singh, had already passed away in 2012.
Following Jasvir’s death, police have registered a case of culpable homicide against two individuals, including a woman alleged to be a drug supplier.
Shinder Kaur, supported by local protesters, has urged the government to move beyond slogans and implement stricter ground-level enforcement. "Chitta has not stopped," she stated, pleading for intervention to save other families from similar grieving events.
