The Punjab government has approved the modernisation of bus terminals in five key districts to upgrade the state's transport infrastructure. According to a report, Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said on Saturday that the bus stands in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala, Bathinda, and Sangrur will be revamped through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The initiative was directed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. It aims to transform these terminals into integrated urban hubs.

Minister Bhullar said that the project is focused on enhancing passenger facilities, safety, and overall efficiency. These terminals are crucial for interstate travel to Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. According to official data, Ludhiana and Jalandhar alone handle between 75,000 and 100,000 passengers daily.

Under the modernisation plan significant improvements will be made for waiting areas, sanitation, lighting, and organised boarding systems. Minister Bhullar emphasised that the project would ensure barrier-free access for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

The projects will follow Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) or Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) models to maintain fiscal prudence. He added that the upgraded terminals would serve as integrated urban hubs to improve passenger convenience and ensure the long-term sustainability of these vital connectivity points."
