Recent snowfall in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand sends temperatures plummeting in Punjab
Punjab Weather Update: In a turn of weather events, Punjab is grappling with a significant drop in temperature levels attributed to recent snowfall in the northern mountain ranges. The impact of this weather phenomenon has transcended the high altitudes of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, extending its icy embrace to the plains, including Punjab, Chandigarh, and Haryana.
According to the Meteorological Department, the proximity to the mountains has intensified the winter experience in Chandigarh and certain districts of Punjab. While the immediate forecast suggests no imminent cold wave for the next two days, the looming threat of bone-chilling temperatures looms as icy winds are anticipated to sweep down from the mountains thereafter.
On Sunday, Punjab witnessed a notable dip of 0.6 degrees in daytime temperatures, remaining in close proximity to the normal range. Notably, Samrala recorded the highest temperature at 23.1 degrees, while Gurdaspur experienced the lowest at 5.5 degrees. Other key cities such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Pathankot, Bathinda, and Moga reported minimum temperatures ranging from 5.6 to 7.1 degrees.
Dr. Naresh Kumar, a scientist from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), explains that the recent snowfall, influenced by the Western Disturbance, is yet to fully impact northern India, including Chandigarh, Punjab, and neighboring regions. The anticipated repercussions are expected after December 22, with a new active Western Disturbance. On December 23, light to moderate rain is forecasted in Majha, Doaba, and East Malwa districts of Punjab, as temperatures are projected to drop by two degrees in the coming three days.
