It added that police cases and raids are being conducted to intimidate editors and prevent them from reporting.
Punjab News: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Punjab has written to the Governor of Punjab, Chandigarh, expressing serious concerns over “media freedom and law & order in Punjab”.
In a letter dated January 17, 2026, addressed to the Governor of Punjab, BJP State President Sunil Jakhar alleged that the law and order situation in the state is in “bad shape” and that people are worried about their safety.
The BJP further alleged that the state government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is suppressing media freedom to prevent it from reporting the alarming law and order situation prevailing in the state, instead of addressing it.
The BJP pointed out that the state government is allegedly “targeting journalists and media houses, including Punjab Kesari Group, which has a history of fearless journalism.”
“Punjab Kesari stood strong during terrorism and always spoke the truth, even when it cost them lives of its founder late Sh. Jagat Narrian ji and Sh. Ramesh ji. Now, the government is misusing its power to silence them,” the letter read.
It added that police cases and raids are being conducted to intimidate editors and prevent them from reporting.
“The media is the voice of the people, and suppressing it is a threat to democracy. The CM's actions are undemocratic and violate democratic values. Meanwhile, gangsters are roaming free, and crime is rising,” the letter further read.
The BJP Punjab has urged Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to direct the chief minister to "stop" the alleged “repression” and let the media work freely.
It further urged the Governor to restore law and order in Punjab.
The letter addressed to the Governor is signed by Sunil Jakhar and several other leaders.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the BJP Punjab met with the governor earlier today. The delegation comprised senior leaders of the Punjab BJP.
It submitted a memorandum to the Governor regarding the issues and demanded the summoning of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the state Home Minister.
“Punjab is becoming a paradise for gangsters,” BJP leader Subhash Sharma said. Another BJP leader, Subhash Sharma, said, “It has been seen in the past few days how attempts have been made to suppress the media.”

The BJP leaders stated that murders are being carried out in the state everyday and flagged extortion calls by gangsters.
Speaking about the drug menace in the state, BJP leader Kewal Dhillon said that in Sherewal village of Ludhiana, the sixth son of a mother had also fallen victim to drugs, while the “Punjab government is making big claims of stopping drugs, but drugs are continuously increasing in Punjab,” despite the state government’s launch of “Yudh Nashiayan Virudh.”
The Punjab government this year launched “Yudh Nashiayan Virudh 2.0”, a statewide year-long campaign aimed at curbing the drug menace in the state. Daily arrests of drug peddlers are being made, and efforts are underway to convince those addicted to enter rehabilitation daily.
