GNDU Hosts World Punjabi Conference on AI and the Future of Punjabi Literature
Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) will host scholars and literature experts for the World Punjabi Conference from February 20 to 22, focusing on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the development of Punjab, the Punjabi language, and Punjabiyat. The event aims to start a dialogue on AI’s use and its impact on the language.
Vice Chancellor Professor Karamjeet Singh said that Punjabi, with its thousands of years of history, now faces a juncture where tradition and modern technology must come together. He described the conference as a milestone in the digital journey of Punjabiyat.
Professor Singh explained that AI allows machines to imitate human intelligence through learning, reasoning, and self-correction. Modern AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok can perform calculations, translate languages, write poetry, and solve complex problems. He noted that for Punjabi, this technology poses philosophical and cultural challenges, as algorithms may not fully capture centuries of human experience.
He emphasised the ethical concerns of AI, including bias and fairness, since machines learn from human-generated data. There is concern that global AI models may overlook local expressions and moral values.
GNDU has established a Centre for Ethical AI in memory of Punjabi poet Surjit Patar, supported by the Punjab government. The centre will focus on Punjabi digital content, large language models, and AI tools such as Gurmukhi keyboards to enhance the global reach of Punjabi literature.
Eminent participants include Padma Bhushan awardees Tarlochan Singh and Sardara Singh Johal, former chief secretary KBS Sidhu, Dr Deepak Manmohan Singh, and Sant Baba Mahendra Singh UK Wale.
