Punjab Panchayat Elections 2024 Latest News Update Today Updates: Voting for the Panchayat elections in Punjab held today. Elections were held for 13,937 Gram Panchayats across the state. A total of 1.33 crore voters were up in the fray to cast their votes in the elections scheduled for October 15. 

There were a total of 19,110 polling booths set up across the state, and approximately 96,000 employees were deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. The government implemented several measures to ensure that the elections were conducted peacefully. Voting was conducted through ballot paper and continued till 4 PM.

All police officers and officials had their leaves canceled until the elections were completed. Additionally, a public holiday was declared throughout Punjab on polling day. More than 52,000 nominations were filed for the post of Sarpanch, while over 1.66 lakh candidates were contesting for Panch positions in today's elections.

According to the Punjab State Election Commission's statement, a total of 52,825 nominations were received for the Sarpanch posts and 1,66,338 nominations for Panch posts in these Gram Panchayat elections.

15:47 PM | 48% Voting in Jalandhar Till 2 PM — Voting has been underway in 695 gram panchayats of Jalandhar district since 8 AM. As of 2 PM, a total of 48 percent of voters have cast their ballots.

15:17 PM | During the elections in Bathinda's village of Akaliyan Kalan, some youths attacked a car belonging to Harpreet Singh, the president of the Akaliyan Kalan truck union. Singh stated that the car was being driven by his brother, who had gone to pick up voters from their homes.

14:27 PM | Stone Pelting During Voting in Amritsar — During the Panchayat elections in the village of Balgan Sidhu, located in the Rajasansi area of Amritsar, a dispute broke out between two groups. This escalated into a scuffle, during which both parties began pelting stones at each other. As a result, voting was halted for about an hour. However, after the situation was brought under control, voting resumed. Many individuals lost their turbans during the scuffle. The police have arrived at the scene and are investigating the incident. It is not yet clear which parties are involved in the conflict.

14:00 PM | A few individuals were injured in a confrontation between two groups in Mangewala village, Moga. The injured parties were initially brought to the Civil Hospital in Droli for preliminary medical attention. Kala Singh, one of the injured, reported that he was attacked by three individuals while en route to cast his vote. According to his statement, the assailants were armed with sticks and assaulted him during the altercation. After receiving first aid at Droli's Civil Hospital, Kala Singh was subsequently referred to the Moga Civil Hospital for further medical treatment.

13:30 PM | Sidhu Moosewala's father and mother Charan Kaur paid for the vote — Late singer Shubdeep Singh Sidhu Moosewala's father Balkaur Singh and mother Charan Kaur have paid their votes during the panchayat elections. At the same time, Sidhu Moosewala's father is also performing duty as a polling agent in favor of his rights. They have appealed to the villagers to pay their votes in a peaceful manner so that a good panchayat can be elected for the village.

13:15 PM | 13 percent voting took place till 11 am — According to the Election Commission, 13 percent voting has taken place till 11 am in the panchayat elections.

12:45 PM | In the Panchayat elections of Punjab, a 10.5 percent voter turnout was recorded by 10 am.

12:31 PM | There will be no elections in two villages of Ludhiana: village Dalla and village Pona.

11:58 AM | Khanna saw a 16 percent voter turnout by 11 am, while Faridkot recorded a 12 percent turnout by 10 am. In Ludhiana, 9 percent of voting took place by 10 am.

11:30 AM | Anandpur Sahib recorded a 13 percent voter turnout by 11 am today.

11:15 AM | The Supreme Court refused to interfere with the Panchayat election going on in Punjab. Supreme Court declined to stay the election saying to stay the conduct of elections is a grave thing. “Polling has opened, suppose we stay now there will be complete chaos. Staying conduct of elections is a grave thing. Tomorrow someone will want to stay in parliamentary elections like this. We will list (the case), but no interim stay,” said the Supreme Court. Plea was mentioned before the apex court for urgent listing of appeal challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court order which had declined to stay the Panchayat election in Punjab.

10:45 AM | Cabinet Minister Lalchand Kataru Chak Votes in Panchayat Elections — Cabinet Minister Lalchand Kataru Chak, along with his family, arrived at his native village of Kataru Chak to cast their votes in the ongoing panchayat elections.

10:30 AM | Bullet Fired Outside Polling Booth in Tarn Taran — An incident of firing has been reported outside a polling booth in Sohal San village, Tarn Taran district. One person was injured in the shooting, which occurred following a scuffle between people standing in line to vote. The individual sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and has been admitted to a hospital in Amritsar. In response, security has been tightened at the polling booth.

10:15 AM | Violence in Barnala Over Sarpanch Election — A fight broke out last night between two groups—supporters of the competing sarpanch candidates—in Karmgarh village, Barnala. Several vehicles were vandalized during the clash. One individual, Singh, has been admitted to the government hospital in Barnala for treatment.

10:00 AM | Punjab Panchayat Elections: Voting is going on peacefully in Moga since 8 am. The voters are looking excited. There are long queues. The police have made elaborate arrangements. There are 20 teams deployed who are keeping an eye on the voting. SDM Sarang Preet Singh shared about the ongoing voting.

9:44 AM | Block Shehna has a total of 49,579 male voters, 43,732 female voters, and 4 third-gender voters. A total of 105 polling stations in the district have been declared sensitive or ultra-sensitive, with heightened police and civil administration arrangements. Continuous videography will be done at these polling stations, and 20 sector officers have been deployed to monitor them.

9:43 AM | High Enthusiasm in Ferozepur’s Panchayat Elections

9:41 AM | The voting enthusiasm is evident in Ferozepur, where elections are being held in 441 out of 835 panchayats, across a total of 510 polling booths. Voting began at 8 AM and will continue until 4 PM, after which counting will take place. Elections are being held in the Ferozepur, Ghalkhurd, Makhu, Zira, Mamdot, and Guruharshay blocks. In village Jhonk Harihar, people are seen standing in long queues to cast their votes.

9:26 AM | DSP Gurwinder Singh is inspecting all sensitive and ultra-sensitive polling booths. The police have warned against any disruptive behavior, assuring that strict action will be taken against any troublemakers.

9:16 AM | Protest Halts Voting in Lakhmir Village, Ferozepur

9:10 AM | In Lakhmir village of Mamdot town, Ferozepur, voting has been delayed due to a protest. Villagers have been sitting in protest since yesterday morning, demanding to cast their votes. The village has not held Panchayat elections for the last five years, and the protestors have blocked the polling booth, preventing government personnel from entering.

8:50 AM | Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains cast his vote in his native village, Gambhirpur, alongside his parents.

8:45 AM | Voting Halted in Kachhari Razada Village, Amritsar

8:40 AM | In Kachhari Razada village of Amritsar, voting was temporarily halted due to missing ballot papers. The candidates contesting the election staged a protest, demanding the issue be resolved. Approximately 100 ballot papers were reported missing out of a total of 425 votes. The administration has been called in to provide new ballot papers, after which voting will resume.

8:30 AM | According to the Panchayat Department, each Panchayat consists of 5 to 13 members, including a Sarpanch. Different candidates are contesting in each ward.

8:15 AM |  3,798 Sarpanchs and 48,861 Panchs have been elected unopposed.

8:10 AM | A total of 20,147 candidates have withdrawn their nominations for the post of Sarpanch in the Gram Panchayat elections, while 31,381 candidates have withdrawn their nominations for the post of Panch. As a result, 25,588 candidates for the post of Sarpanch and 80,598 candidates for the post of Panch remain in the electoral race.

8:05 AM | The entire process of the panchayat elections will be recorded through videography. In this regard, the Election Commission has issued instructions to the election officers of all districts. The officers are now required to make the necessary arrangements at their own level in their respective districts. Additionally, the entire process will be closely monitored by the Election Commission.

8:00 AM | Voting for the Panchayat elections in Punjab begins

7:45 AM | Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will not be used in the election. Instead, there will be an option for NOTA (None of the Above) on the ballot paper. A total of 96,000 employees have been deployed for election duty. The police have made adequate security arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of the elections. Voting will continue until 4 PM, after which the votes will be counted.
