State-Wide Stir: KMM Burns Copies of Electricity and Seed Bills Across Punjab
On Tuesday, the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) marked Lohri by burning copies of several proposed Central Government Bills in bonfires across 20 districts of Punjab.
According to the report, the protests targeted the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, the Seed Bill, and the VB-G-Ram-G Bill, which the Morcha describes as "anti-people".
Protests were reported in 20 districts, including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Patiala. Kisan Sangharsh Committee general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher said that the massive participation, including farmers, labourers, students, and small traders, reflects deep public anger.
The Morcha alleges these laws are being introduced under the influence of international bodies like the WTO and IMF to benefit corporate houses at the expense of the common man.
The KMM accused both the Narendra Modi-led Central Government and the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab Government of their failures in protecting the state’s interests.
The organisation claims these policies weaken the federal structure by centralising control over state subjects like electricity and water.
Looking forward, the Morcha has announced further action, including questioning the Chief Minister at a Majitha rally on January 18 and staging protests outside MLAs' residences on February 5.
