Farmers Defy Police: 59 Toll Plazas Made Free in Statewide SKM Strike
Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) activists and leaders successfully freed all 59 toll plazas across Punjab for a three-hour window on Monday afternoon.
The demonstration occurred between 12 pm and 3 pm, and farmers prevented fee collection to protest against various central government policies, specifically the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025.
In Mohali district, four major sites, including Azizpur, Dappar, Baroudi, and Bhago Majra, were rendered toll-free.
The move resulted in significant financial losses to the exchequer as vehicles passed without payment.
There was intense friction as protesters, carrying organisational flags and shouting slogans against the state government, reached the plazas.
Initial resistance from police personnel resulted in a brief struggle; however, authorities eventually relented, allowing the symbolic "toll-free" period to proceed.
Several activists, including prominent SKM leader Gurdarshan Singh, were detained by the police during the confrontation but were subsequently released after the protest concluded. Police officials stated they lacked prior specific information regarding the scale of the stir.
