On Friday, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann emphasised the importance of forging a strategic partnership between the Government of Punjab and the United Kingdom to accelerate investment, manufacturing growth and skilled workforce between the two regions during a high-level meeting with the UK Deputy High Commissioner, Alba Smeriglio, and her delegation in Chandigarh, an official statement said.

According to the statement, Mann highlighted that Punjab has the potential to emerge as a global manufacturing hub. He invited the UK to partner in realising this vision. He highlighted Mohali’s strengths and described it as “one of the best-organised cities in the world” with an international airport and a large skilled talent pool within a 100-kilometre radius, making it an ideal destination for investors.

The Chief Minister outlined the state’s robust investment ecosystem, noting competitive power tariffs, land availability and a transparent single-window system that places Punjab at the top in ease-of-doing-business rankings. He invited representatives of the UK business community to the upcoming Progressive Punjab Investors’ Summit in Mohali in March and urged delegates to explore opportunities across agro-machinery, food processing, IT and other major sectors.

Mann highlighted the importance of legal cooperation on transnational issues such as organised crime. He acknowledged that such challenges extend beyond national borders, the statement added. He assured full support from the state government in facilitating legal and administrative cooperation where required.

On educational and human capital ties, Mann spoke about the strong aspirations of Punjabi students seeking opportunities in the UK through legal and safe channels, reinforcing the need for structured cooperation on student mobility and skills development.

According to the statement, the UK Deputy High Commissioner acknowledged the significant potential of the Punjabi diaspora. He noted the substantial funds and interest available for investment in their home state, and both sides expressed a shared commitment to deepen economic, educational and people-to-people ties.
