Punjab’s Famous ‘Ghora Mandi’ Set for Grand Maghi Showcase
The Punjab government is set to host the legendary ‘Ghora Mandi’ at Sri Muktsar Sahib, a cornerstone of the annual Maghi celebrations. Animal Husbandry Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian announced that the traditional horse and cattle fair will be a grand spectacle of rural heritage, which is expected to draw thousands of breeders, traders, and enthusiasts from across Northern India.
The fair will be spread over a 70-acre site, featuring prized equine breeds, most notably the Marwari and Nukra. Beyond trade, the event serves as a celebration of Punjab’s deep-rooted agrarian soul and animal husbandry excellence.
To ensure the safety of the livestock, a dedicated temporary veterinary dispensary has been established at the venue. A 40-member specialised team, led by Deputy Director Gurdit Singh, has been deployed to provide round-the-clock medical care and disease surveillance.
Minister Khudian said that livestock farmers have already started arriving with their animals, signalling a robust turnout.
Principal Secretary Rahul Bhandari emphasised that the Mandi is crucial for boosting the rural economy and fostering regional trade. Authorities have urged farmers to bring only healthy livestock to the venue to maintain strict biosafety protocols.
The fair remains a vibrant testament to Punjab’s thriving livestock sector and enduring cultural traditions.
