Punjab Govt Begins Distribution of Free Wheat Seeds to Flood-Affected Farmers; CM Mann Flags Off

Chief Minister said that Punjab had never witnessed such extensive damage before

The Punjab government has begun the process of distributing free wheat seeds to farmers in flood-affected districts, according to a press release from the Chief Minister’s Office.

To mark the launch of this initiative, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday flagged off seven trucks carrying wheat seeds as part of the government’s effort to provide two lakh quintals of wheat seeds free of cost to farmers who lost their crops across five lakh acres of land during the recent floods.

CM Mann said that the state government stands firmly with the farmers who suffered devastating losses due to the 2025 floods, adding that two lakh quintals of seeds worth Rs 74 crore will be provided free of charge. He assured that the distribution process would be completed soon.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the hardworking and resilient farmers of Punjab have played a key role in making India self-sufficient in food production. However, he noted that they are currently facing a major crisis due to the floods. Mann reaffirmed that his government would “leave no stone unturned to bail them out.”

He added that the free wheat seeds are being provided to help farmers sow the upcoming Rabi crop, describing the initiative as a humble effort by the state to mitigate the hardships faced by farmers in the wake of the disaster.

Calling the destruction caused by the floods “unimaginable and unprecedented,” the Chief Minister said that Punjab had never witnessed such extensive damage before. He lauded the courage and resilience of Punjab’s farmers, who, despite the severe losses, are ready to contribute once again to the national food pool.

The 2025 floods have caused widespread devastation in the state, considered by experts to be the worst flooding in nearly four decades.

CM Mann expressed grief over the scale of destruction, noting that the floods submerged over 2,300 villages, affected more than 2 million people, and destroyed crops across five lakh acres of farmland.

He further said that 56 lives were lost, around seven lakh people were rendered homeless, and thousands of public facilities were damaged, including 3,200 government schools, 19 colleges, 1,400 clinics and hospitals, 8,500 kilometers of roads, and 2,500 bridges.

The Chief Minister added that, according to initial estimates, the total damage amounts to approximately Rs 13,800 crore, though the actual figure could be even higher.
