From British Architecture to 'Sewa Teerth': PM Modi to Hold Final Cabinet Meeting at Iconic South Block Tomorrow
India’s administrative landscape undergoes a historic shift this Friday as the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) officially vacates its British-era quarters in the South Block. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new "Sewa Teerth" complex on February 13, marking the end of 99 years of governance from the iconic Raisina Hill buildings. Before the move, the Prime Minister will chair a final Union Cabinet meeting at the historic South Block location.
The transition follows the relocation of the Ministry of Home Affairs and other departments to the Common Central Secretariat. The new Sewa Teerth complex will now centralise the PMO, the Cabinet Secretariat, and the National Security Council Secretariat. Simultaneously, Kartavya Bhavan-1 and 2 will house major ministries, including Finance, Defence, and Health.
Officials state these modern facilities replace ageing, fragmented infrastructure that previously led to high maintenance costs and operational delays. Built to 4-star GRIHA standards, the new complexes feature digitally integrated offices and sustainable systems like renewable energy and water conservation.
Meanwhile, the vacated North and South Blocks will begin their transformation into the "Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum. " Once completed, it will be the world’s largest museum, dedicated to chronicling India’s civilisational journey.
