The controversy intensified following an attack on a local businessman by a group of Muslim youths.
What is Shimla's Sanjauli Mosque Controversy in Himachal Pradesh? Protests erupted in Shimla’s Dhalli area on Wednesday, as locals, including members of Hindu organizations, rallied against what they allege is the illegal construction of a mosque in the Sanjauli region. Waving the national flag and chanting slogans like "Himachal Ne Thana Hai, Devbhoomi Ko Bachana Hai," demonstrators demanded swift action to halt the construction, which they claim lacks proper authorization.
Political Accusations
Naresh Chauhan, an advisor to the Himachal Pradesh government, dismissed the protests as politically charged, accusing BJP members of attempting to elevate the issue to a national controversy. He clarified that the matter is purely legal, unrelated to religious conflicts, and being addressed as a law-and-order situation. Chauhan further emphasized that the issue is being handled through the courts, and local support for the protests has been minimal.
Waqf Board's Stand on Ownership
The Waqf Board, in its submission to a Shimla court, claimed ownership of the Sanjauli Mosque and explained that the dispute concerns further construction and development. The case is currently under review, with the next hearing scheduled for October 5. Meanwhile, local residents have continued to demand the mosque's demolition, insisting that it was constructed without proper authorization.
Violence Escalates Tensions
The controversy intensified following an attack on a local businessman by a group of Muslim youths in nearby Malyana, heightening communal tensions and adding fuel to the protests.
Opposition's Criticism of Government Inaction
Jairam Thakur, Leader of the Opposition in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, criticized the state government for its delayed response to the mosque's construction. Thakur urged the government to address the concerns of local Hindus promptly, advocating for a peaceful resolution to the dispute while maintaining order.
Thakur stated, "Himachal Pradesh has a reputation for peaceful coexistence, but the government’s slow intervention has exacerbated the situation."
Heightened Security Measures
In light of the protests, a heavy police presence was deployed in the Dhalli area to ensure order. Authorities also conducted vehicle inspections near the protest site to prevent any escalation. Despite the demonstrations, no significant incidents were reported.
The Shimla mosque dispute continues to be a contentious issue, with further developments awaited in the coming weeks.
