Punjab University Issue latest News: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday criticized the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for allegedly “desperately trying for a backdoor entry into Panjab University,” according to a press release issued by his office.
The Chief Minister affirmed that he would not allow such an attempt.
CM Mann stated that ever since its inception, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been a part of the “emotional, cultural, literary, and rich legacy of the state.”
Bhagwant Singh Mann alleged that regular attempts are being made to change the status of the university, but asserted that the Punjab government will not allow any such move in the larger interests of students.
Criticizing the Centre further, CM Mann said, “The BJP is suffering from an anti-Punjab syndrome due to which they are hell-bent on ruining the state.”
He added that the BJP does not allow the state’s tableaux to participate in the Independence Day and Republic Day functions. Likewise, Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the undue interference in BBMB, Panjab University, and other state affairs also reflects the hostile attitude of the saffron party towards Punjab, according to the press release.
He also slammed the Centre for allegedly meting out step-motherly treatment to the state, especially in the aftermath of this year’s devastating floods.
The Chief Minister said that the state is yet to receive the Rs 1,600 crore announced by the Prime Minister for flood relief, adding that, to aggravate the situation, the Central government is trying to adjust the funds from other ongoing schemes instead.
Bhagwant Singh Mann urged the Union government to stop this "maltreatment" of Punjab, “the food bowl and the sword arm of the country.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said that as farmers in the state suffered heavy losses during the recent floods, the state government is providing two lakh quintals of seeds worth Rs 74 crore free of cost to them.
He added that the process of distributing these seeds to farmers in flood-affected districts has already begun and will be completed soon. The Chief Minister also said that the state government has disbursed compensation worth Rs 20,000 per acre to farmers for crop loss, the highest ever given by any state government in the country.
Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian and others were also present.
Meanwhile, protests continue at the university with police resorting to 'lathichage' to disperse protesting students at Panjab University who were demanding the conduct of senate elections. Heavy police deployment continues around the campus after clashes broke out between students and security personnel.
