Organic Mid-Day Meals: Mann Govt to Set Up 'Nutritious Gardens' in 5,000+ Punjab Schools
The Punjab government, led by CM Bhagwant Mann, has decided to establish "Nutritious Gardens" in 5,073 government schools across the state towards improving student health and promoting organic farming.
This initiative is based on guidelines from the Punjab State Food Commission and aims to provide fresh, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables for midday meals, effectively moving students toward a healthier, organic diet.
The project utilises surplus land in schools that was previously neglected. By collaborating with the Agriculture, Horticulture, and Education Departments, these areas will be transformed into herbal and fruit gardens.
Beyond just providing nutrition, which focuses on an "80% nutrition and 20% taste" formula, the gardens will serve as living laboratories where students can learn about modern agricultural techniques and crop diversity from a young age.
Special training is being provided to teachers to ensure the successful management of these gardens. The initiative is not limited to primary and secondary schools; it also extends to 1,100 Anganwadi centres to ensure nutrition from the ground up.
By integrating health, education, and environmental conservation, the Mann government aims to build a "Healthy Punjab" while making the state a leader in educational infrastructure reforms.
