12,000 Personnel Deployed for Operation Prahar 2.0 Across Punjab; DGP Reviews Security Situation
Facing heat from the Opposition and the Punjab Governor over the state's security situation, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Sunday announced the launch of a 72-hour statewide crackdown titled “Operation Prahar 2.0”, starting February 9.
According to the DGP, the second phase will see nearly 12,000 personnel in 2,000 teams deployed across Punjab. This move follows the success of Phase 1, dubbed ‘Gangster te war’, which resulted in the arrest of 5,290 individuals, including gangsters and criminals, since January 20. During these operations, 17,603 raids were conducted, leading to the recovery of 128 arms and the arrest of 344 proclaimed offenders.
Responding to criticism from Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and political leaders regarding "lawlessness", DGP Yadav asserted that Punjab’s crime rate remains below the national average. He cited that Punjab records 227 crimes per lakh population against the national average of 450. Furthermore, the state’s heinous crime average stands at 21, compared to the national figure of 31.2.
The DGP also confirmed that the police have initiated extradition or deportation requests for 38 gangsters operating from abroad. Addressing social media concerns, the DGP said that nearly 10,000 URLs were processed for spreading misinformation, resulting in 350 FIRs. He further noted that 3,500 arms licences have been suspended as part of the ongoing crackdown.
