SGPC President elections 2023 News Highlights: The general house meeting of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) was held on Wednesday. This year, the main contest for SGPC's top post was between the incumbent president Harjinder Singh Dhami, and SGPC member Balbir Singh Ghunas.
Both the camps— one controlled by Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) (in the majority), and the other one supported by Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led splinter Akali group, SAD (Sanyukt) — have not been proactive in garnering support.
In 2022, Harjinder Singh Dhami was re-elected as president for the second consecutive term, defeating the former three-time president, Bibi Jagir Kaur. While Shiromani Akali Dal's candidate had won the election with a huge margin, its strength weakened in the SGPC General House with over 20 members getting into the fold of opposition.
Back then, Harjinder Singh Dhami had received 104 votes, while Bibi Jagir Kaur bagged only 42 out of 146 votes polled with secret ballot papers. Notably, SGPC is an organization that is responsible for the management of historic gurdwaras in three states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh besides Chandigarh.

12:30 pm | Gurcharan Grewal said that Harjinder Singh Dhami will become president for the third time, this time with an even a bigger margin.
11:15 am | The decision of the SGPC will be taken today shortly. Voting will start at around 1 p.m.
10:30 am | Harjinder Singh Dhami is SGPC member from Hoshiarpur. Advocate Dhami became the President for the first time in 2021. In 2022, he won the presidency for the second time with a huge margin.
10:00 am | It is pertinent to mention that, as per rules, SGPC members should be elected every five years, but it does not happen. The last election of members was held in the year 2011.
9:30 am | All the preparations have been completed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.
9:00 am | A general meeting will be held at Teja Singh Samari Hall to elect the members of the 15-member internal committee, including the president, senior vice president, junior vice president, and general secretary of the Gurdwara body.
