Dignity for Seniors: Punjab Govt Finally Allots Land for Mohali’s First Old Age Home
In a significant move for senior citizen welfare, the Punjab government has allotted a three-acre site in Sector 78 for Mohali’s first dedicated old age home. Deputy Mayor Kuljeet Singh Bedi said that the land allotment follows years of rigorous administrative and legal follow-up, including proceedings before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The proposed facility is set to be developed on the pattern of the existing old age home in Tapa, Punjab. According to Bedi, the centre aims to provide structured care, medical support, and a secure environment for the elderly. The initiative aligns with the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which mandates the establishment of such homes for indigent senior citizens.
Highlighting the urgency of the project, the Deputy Mayor noted that a substantial number of senior citizens in Mohali currently live alone, with their children settled abroad or in other cities. This demographic shift underscored the critical need for a state-run support system.
Bedi, who has been pursuing the matter with the state government and GMADA through various representations and affidavits, stated that he would continue to monitor the project to ensure its timely construction and operationalisation.
