The protest, organized by the Kala Paani The Morcha under the leadership of Lakha Sidhana, focused on the rising pollution in Budha Nullah and the hazardous waste that flows into the Sutlej River. The protestors, including many from Rajasthan, highlighted the health risks posed to local residents, as contaminated water from the Nullah has led to widespread illness in Rajasthan.

In response, police commissioner Kuldeep Chahal arrived at the site to oversee the situation. After the initial arrests, a group of protesters blocked the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway. In an effort to curb communication, authorities deployed jammers to disrupt mobile networks in the protest areas.

Earlier, key figures like Titu Bania, Roman Barad, and Sukh Jagraon were also detained. With additional police forces deployed around the city, the administration has warned of strict action against anyone attempting to disrupt the peace.
