Mr. Kanwar Sandhu, MLA, Kharar, has demanded posting of round-the-clock armed security personnel at the office

Chandigarh, April 3: Mr. Kanwar Sandhu, MLA, Kharar, has demanded posting of round-the-clock armed security personnel at the office of the Food & Drugs Administration here, where the Zonal Licensing Authority, Dr Neha Shoree was shot dead five days ago. In a letter to the Punjab DGP, Mr. Dinkar Gupta, the MLA Mr. Sandhu said that when he again visited the office today

He was shocked to see that even after such a gruesome and blatant murder of an employee, no government security staff had been deputed at the office. "Since the office handles drug and food samples collected from all over the state, it is highly vulnerable to attack by nefarious elements," he added. Besides a posse of security personnel headed by an Assistant Sub-Inspector, a metal detector should also be placed at the entrance of the building, which is adjoining the Civil Hospital in Kharar.

The MLA demanded that a Mobile Police Van should also be stationed 24X7 outside the office for any eventuality.Copies of the letter were also marked to the Additional Chief Secretary, Health, Mr. Satish Chandra and SSP, Mohali, Mr H.S.Bhullar.The Kharar MLA pointed out that it was sad that despite a state-wide crack down against drugs launched two years ago, the FDA Office at Kharar, which was under the State Health Department, had not been provided security.

On the other hand, the office of the Chemical Examiner, which functioned under the Department of Home Affairs, on the top floors in the same 5-storey building had a round-the-clock security. This office handles chemical examination of viscera etc. following medico-legal cases. "One or two of their security personnel could be stationed at the entrance of the building," the MLA suggested.

Mr. Sandhu, who also met some of the members of the Staff at the DFA office to motivate them. Since some employees were fearful, the Government should look at the possibility of providing them security at their homes. The accused, Balwinder Singh, who killed Dr Shoree, had faced raids at his Chemist Shop in Morinda about 10 years ago following which his license had been cancelled.

Mr. Sandhu wanted the police to check if he had any "benami" interests in other licenses which had been cancelled in the recent months, which may have acted as the immediate trigger for the crime. The MLA urged the Government to reward Dr Shoree posthumously for her efforts and also recognise the efforts of those employees who prevented the accused from fleeing the building risking their lives in the process.
