Punjab Man Dies in Russia War: A 30-year-old man from Punjab’s Jalandhar has died in the war in Russia, and his mortal remains arrived in Delhi on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Mandeep Kumar, a resident of Goraya. According to information received, he fell prey to travel agents and was forcibly recruited into the Russian army.
Mandeep’s body arrived in India from Russia at around 1 pm, and the family received his mortal remains at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The family will take the body to Jalandhar for the last rites.
His brother, Jagdeep Kumar, had earlier travelled to Russia in search of Mandeep, who had been missing for several months. He had also raised the matter with the Punjab government and the Central government.
Mandeep Kumar had left for Armenia on September 17, 2023, along with a relative and three acquaintances. They reached Armenia via a flight from Amritsar and worked as labourers there for three months. On December 9, 2023, they travelled to Russia. However, Mandeep stayed back in Russia, while his relative and the three other companions returned to India.
Jagdeep Kumar said the family will now seek information on how his brother was recruited into the Russian army, stating that Mandeep was disabled and persons with disabilities are not eligible for army recruitment. He added that they will raise the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Russian government, and will also file a case in a Russian court.
