Cold Tightens Grip Across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh as Temperatures Stay Above Normal
According to official weather data by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), intense cold weather continues to hold its grip across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on Saturday, even as minimum temperatures remained above normal at many places.
Meteorological officials said that in Haryana, Mahendragarh was the coldest place with a low of 4 deg C, while Ambala experienced cold at 11.2 deg C, which was four degrees above normal, as per IMD observations. Hisar recorded 8.1 deg C (two degrees above average) and Karnal saw a low of 9 deg C, also above normal. Rohtak’s minimum was 9.8 deg C. Bhiwani, Sirsa and Faridabad registered 5.8 deg C, 9 deg C and 6.3 deg C respectively.

As per official records in Punjab, Faridkot emerged as the coldest place with 5.5 deg C. Amritsar’s minimum was 7.5 deg C, four degrees above the seasonal average, while Ludhiana recorded 9.6 deg C. Patiala’s low was 8.3 deg C. Other districts including Pathankot, Bathinda, Gurdaspur and SBS Nagar saw lows of 9.2 deg C, 8.2 deg C, 8 deg C and 7.4 deg C respectively.
Weather experts said that despite the chill, the fact that many lows were above normal climatological values indicates a moderate rather than severe cold spell this week, even as people bundled up to face winter conditions.
