The decision to revoke the title came in the wake of serious admissions made by Sukhbir Singh Badal during the Tankhaiya verdict session.
Fakhr-e-Qaum Title Revoked from Parkash Singh Badal Amid Sukhbir Singh Badal’s 'Tankhaiya' Verdict:– In a historic decision during the verdict session on Sukhbir Singh Badal’s Tankhaiya case at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the revered religious body has taken the unprecedented step of revoking the Fakhr-e-Qaum title from former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
The title Fakhr-e-Qaum (Pride of the Nation) was conferred upon Parkash Singh Badal in 2011 by Sri Akal Takht Sahib in recognition of his long political career and contributions to the Sikh community. The event took place within the Golden Temple premises, where Badal was honored in the presence of the Jathedars of the five Takhts. However, the move was met with significant opposition from various political and radical organizations, with the Jathedar of Damdama Sahib notably staying absent from the ceremony.
Revocation of Title Linked to Accountability
The decision to revoke the title came in the wake of serious admissions made by Sukhbir Singh Badal during the Tankhaiya verdict session, where he acknowledged several controversial actions and decisions that had tarnished the image of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and its leadership. This includes his involvement in promoting officers linked to violence against Sikhs, his role in the pardon granted to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Ram Rahim, and his responsibility in the Behbal Kalan firing incident.
Following these confessions, and in light of the wider accountability process initiated by Sri Akal Takht Sahib, it was decided that Parkash Singh Badal's Fakhr-e-Qaum title would be revoked. The symbolic action was seen as a direct consequence of the party’s failure to uphold Sikh values and its controversial stances on issues of religious significance.
