Kejriwal Slams BJP Over Slum Demolitions, Urges Voters to Reject Both BJP and Congress
New Delhi, June 30: Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday led a protest at Jantar Mantar against the ongoing slum demolition drives in the national capital. Addressing the gathering, Kejriwal urged slum dwellers to unite and protest against the BJP-led central government's demolition campaigns and to reject both the BJP and the Congress in future elections.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said ‘Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan’, but what he actually meant was ‘Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Maidan’. His promises are false and I urge you not to fall for them again,” Kejriwal said.
Criticizing the state of governance, Kejriwal alleged, “We left behind a well-functioning Delhi, but they have ruined it. There are long power cuts, school fees have increased, and their ministers and MLAs are looting Delhi.”
He appealed to slum residents to come together, saying, “There are 40 lakh slum dwellers in Delhi. If you all unite and come out on the streets, the current government will be forced to stop these demolitions.”
He urged not to vote for both congress and BJP saying both are “brother and sister.”
“When Congress was in power, there were power cuts and arbitrary fee hikes. We prevented that for 10 years, but after the BJP came to power, the same things are happening again,” he added.
Kejriwal also condemned the timing of the demolition drives. “They are demolishing slums in 50°C scorching heat. I had warned before the elections not to vote for BJP. I said they would demolish your homes within a year, but they have already started within 5 months. They’ve destroyed homes and livelihoods. Poor people live close to where they work. Destroying slums is like destroying their lives.”
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva responded sharply to Kejriwal’s remarks, saying, “During the pandemic, the BJP government ensured food and shelter for the poor. Meanwhile, it was Kejriwal who was plotting to drive slum dwellers out of Delhi. He should clarify whether he has built even a single house for the slum dwellers in the last 10 years. Due to his stubbornness, 50,000 houses built in Narela were left abandoned instead of being given to the poor.”
