Budget Session Phase Two Begins Today; Resolution Against Speaker Om Birla Likely in Lok Sabha
The second phase of the Budget Session of Parliament is set to commence today and will continue until 2 April. The session resumes after the first phase concluded last month following discussions on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address and the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27.
In the Lok Sabha, opposition members are expected to move a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla. Congress MPs Mohamed Jawed, K. Suresh and Mallu Ravi have submitted the notice. If the resolution is taken up in the House, the Speaker will not preside over the proceedings and will instead sit among the members.
The opposition had earlier submitted a no-confidence notice to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha during the first phase of the Budget Session. In the notice, opposition parties accused the Speaker of acting in a partisan manner. The document was reportedly signed by 118 Members of Parliament from parties including the Congress, Samajwadi Party and DMK.
Meanwhile, both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress have issued three-line whips directing their Lok Sabha members to remain present in the House until Tuesday.
