Their decision came after a meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi yesterday, which confirmed growing speculations that the two athletes would enter the political arena under the Congress banner.

Vinesh Phogat, who returned to India following a challenging campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics, wherein she was disqualified from the Gold medal match for merely 100 gm overweight, has been an outspoken critic of the current government, particularly in light of the wrestlers' protest earlier this year. 

Phogat, along with other prominent Indian wrestlers, took to the streets of Delhi to demand action against the then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan, accusing him of misconduct.

After her return from the Olympics, Vinesh Phogat also made headlines by visiting the farmers' protest site at the Shambhu border, lending her voice to their demands and expressing solidarity with the farmers’ cause.

With Phogat and Punia joining Congress, their political involvement could significantly influence Haryana’s electoral dynamics, particularly in rural and sports communities where they are revered figures. This move by the wrestling icons is expected to bring further attention to Congress’s campaign as the state heads toward the elections.
