
Hyderabad: Police today arrested six
persons, two of them women, for allegedly trying to buy a six-
day-old baby girl from a poor couple.
Based on a specific information, police laid a trap
and nabbed a group of persons near a temple at Saroor Nagar,
where they had come to complete the deal, an official said.
The newborn was rescued and will be handed over to the
local Child Welfare Committee, Rachakonda Police Commissioner
Mahesh M Bhagwat said.
"The gang, led by one Kedavath Ravi, contacted a
tribal couple in a village in Mahbubnagar district and offered
to buy their newborn child," Bhagwat said.
The couple is poor and already has two daughters, said
Bhagwat.
According to police, the gang members planned to buy
the newborn for Rs 15,000 and sell her to a prospective
customer for Rs 80,000.
The accused were booked for trafficking of a minor
under relevant sections of the IPC besides provisions of the
Juvenile Justice Act, police said, adding further probe was
on.
