Kendrapara (Odisha): A farmer allegedly
committed suicide in Kendrapara today, the first such incident
in the coastal district of Odisha, the police said.
The family members of the farmer, Bhabagrahi Sutar (48),
claimed that he took the extreme step due to crop loss in the
unseasonal rain, they added.
Sutar allegedly ended his life by hanging himself at
Namatara village and a case of unnatural death was lodged in
this regard, the police said.
An FIR, lodged on the basis of a complaint from the
deceased's family members, alleged that crop loss due to the
unseasonal rain prompted the farmer to end his life.
They claimed that the farmer was under a severe stress
as he had borrowed Rs 1 lakh for cultivating his two-acre crop
land. His ready-to-harvest crop was damaged in the unseasonal
rain, occurring in the state since November 13, and he had
become apprehensive that he would not be able to repay the
loan.
Kendrapara Sub-Collector Kanhu Charan Dhir said the local
tehsildar has been asked to probe the incident and submit a
report.
