Coimbatore: A special court here today sentenced a 23-year-old man to life
imprisonment for murdering his wife in full public view while she was
travelling in a bus over 10 months ago.
The order sentencing daily wage earner Udaykumar of Sirumugai in Coimbatore district was passed by judge Gunasekharan.
The prosecution case was that Udaykumar had fallen in love with Anandi,
a friend of his sister, and married her in October 2016.
He
used to quarrel and beat the woman under influence of liquor following
which the woman removed her 'thaali' (mangalsutra), left home and stayed
with some relatives at Kothagiri in Nilgiris district.
He went there and asked her to return. When she refused, he smashed her head against the wall, the prosecution said.
Anandi then left the place and stayed with her mother, it said.
When
she was travelling to Mettupalayam in a bus along with her mother on
May 5 last, Udaykumar entered the vehicle and requested her to return
home with him, it said.
He stabbed her with a knife when she refused, the prosecution said.
Anandi succumbed to her injuries at the Mettupalayam government hospital.
