India Tightens Security Across Major Cities Ahead of New Year Celebrations

India has tightened its security ahead of New Year’s celebrations across major cities to ensure public safety and prevent disorder. In the national capital, Delhi Police has deployed about 3,000 personnel and established over 50 checkpoints to curb traffic violations and public disorder, including cases of drunk driving, rash motorcycle stunts and other risks associated with large crowds. Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjay Kumar Jain told ANI that static and mobile patrol teams are active and about 60 party hotspots, including malls, markets and nightlife zones, have been identified for intensive checks and visibility patrols.

In Bengaluru, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that over 20,000 police personnel, including specialised women squads, have been deployed across the city with modern crowd monitoring technology and heat map tools to manage safety and traffic. Authorities are also running extended BMTC bus services to facilitate safe travel post-midnight.

In Kolkata, security arrangements include increased measures at major stations such as Esplanade, Park Street and Maidan, with additional Railway Protection Force staff and women RPF officers focused on crowd regulation.

In Mumbai, more than 17,000 personnel including senior police officers and specialised units, have been deployed under extensive measures to ensure law and order as celebrations continue into the early hours, according to city police officials, who urged citizens to use helplines in emergencies.
