Onion Prices Surge: Consumers Awaiting Relief in Upcoming Months

Onion Prices Surge Latest News: As the festive season commences and the cold weather sets in, the relentless surge in onion prices has left consumers feeling the pinch. Just as the skyrocketing tomato prices had people in tears, onions are now causing distress as their costs in various districts across the country breach the Rs 100 per kilogram mark. Over the past few days, the onion, which once sold at Rs 35-40 per kilogram, has witnessed a sharp rise, with prices hovering around Rs 60-70 per kilogram. Traders are even speculating that onion prices might hit the Rs 100 per kilogram mark before the upcoming Diwali festival.

In the nation's capital, Delhi, onion prices soared to Rs 90 per kilogram on October 27, and experts predict that they are on track to cross the Rs 100 mark soon. This unsettling increase is being driven by a daily rise of 10 to 20 rupees per kilogram in onion prices. Meanwhile, retail prices in cities such as Kanpur, Lucknow, and Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh are holding steady at Rs 70 per kilogram. In other cities like Agra, Gorakhpur, and Varanasi, onions are being sold at retail prices ranging from Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kilogram. The cost of onions in Himachal Pradesh currently stands at Rs 60-70 per kilogram.

Traders are attributing this steep price hike to a shortage of onions in the market. They emphasize that prices can be expected to stabilize once there is an adequate supply of fresh produce, which is anticipated to arrive next month, around November-December. Until then, consumers may continue to bear the brunt of soaring onion prices, which are inching closer to the significant milestone of Rs 100 per kilogram.
