US President Donald Trump Announces 25% Tariff on India Starting August 1st

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that India will face a 25% tariff starting August 1st. He stated that India would also incur an additional penalty for purchasing energy and the “vast majority” of military equipment from Russia.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump said, “US Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high—among the highest in the world—and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any country.”

He added, “Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia and are Russia’s largest buyer of energy, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!”

In a subsequent post, he said, “WE HAVE A MASSIVE TRADE DEFICIT WITH INDIA!!!”

Last week U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham had warned India, China, and Brazil of facing 100% tariffs if the countries continue to purchase "cheap" Russian oil, which he claimed is helping “keep Putin's war machine going.”

Speaking on Fox News’ “Sunday Night in America” show, Graham responded to a question on the current state of war in both Ukraine and the Middle East.

On the TV, Graham had issued a direct warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, “Your turn is coming.” He had said, “So Trump has been tough on Iran, which has been incredibly dangerous, but they are now in an awakened state. Putin, your turn is coming.”

Graham had said, “What’s going to happen here is, Trump is going to impose tariffs on people that buy Russian oil: China, India, and Brazil. Those three countries buy about 80% of cheap Russian oil, and that's what keeps Putin's war machine going. So, President Trump is going to put a 100% tariff on all those countries, punishing them for helping Putin.”

He added that Putin could survive sanctions and “could give a damn about Russian soldiers,” but emphasized that China, India, and Brazil will soon have to choose between the American economy or supporting Putin. “And I think they are going to pick the American economy,” he said.

Graham also said Putin made a “major league mistake” and warned that the Russian economy is going to be crushed. “We are flowing weapons to Ukraine, so Ukraine will have the weapons to fight Putin back,” he added.

Addressing China, India, and Brazil directly, Graham had stated, “If you keep buying cheap Russian oil to allow this war to continue, we’re going to tear the hell out of you and crush your economy, because what you are doing is blood money.”

“You’re buying cheap Russian oil at the expense of the world, and President Trump is tired of this game,” he said.

Graham had also urged Putin to get to the negotiating table.
