Centre Revamps National Security Advisory Board Amid Rising Tensions Between India and Pakistan

The NSAB operates under the aegis of the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).

National Security Advisory Board, NSAB, Board Latest News Today: In a significant move reflecting growing security concerns, the Indian government has reconstituted the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) and appointed former Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief Alok Joshi as its new Chairman. The reshuffle comes amid heightened tensions with Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead.

The revamped seven-member board now includes several high-ranking retired officials from the armed forces, police services, and diplomacy:

  • Air Marshal PM Sinha, former Western Air Commander
  • Lt Gen AK Singh, former Southern Army Commander
  • Rear Admiral Monty Khanna, retired Navy officer
  • Rajiv Ranjan Verma and Manmohan Singh, both retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officers
  • B Venkatesh Varma, former Indian Foreign Service (IFS) diplomat

The reconstitution is seen as a proactive step by the government to strengthen strategic oversight and advisory mechanisms as tensions surge with Pakistan over its alleged involvement in the April 22 terror strike in Pahalgam. The attack has prompted a series of counter-terror operations and escalated security preparedness along the border.

The NSAB operates under the aegis of the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and plays a critical role in providing long-term strategic analysis and policy recommendations to the government on issues related to national security and foreign affairs.
