National Center for Seismology Monitors Island Region After Third Earthquake This Year

NEW-DELHI: On Saturday night, a powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 69 km beneath the island's surface.

This recent seismic event marks the third earthquake to hit the Andaman-Nicobar Islands this year. On July 9, another earthquake, measuring 5.3 magnitude, struck southeast of Campbell Bay, with its epicenter recorded at a depth of 70 km.

In March, the Nicobar region experienced a magnitude 5 earthquake, originating from a depth of 10 km, as per reports from the National Seismological Center. Additionally, last year saw a total of 22 earthquakes ranging from magnitudes 3.8 to 5 within a 24-hour period in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. There have been no reports of casualties or major damages resulting from the recent 5.8 magnitude earthquake.
