Angry Demonstrators Clash with Security Forces, Leading to Injuries and Arson Amidst Ongoing Unrest

IMPHAL: Unrest and violent protests gripped Manipur as aggrieved citizens voiced their outrage over the recent deaths of two students. The agitation escalated on Thursday morning, with a furious mob wreaking havoc by vandalizing the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office in Imphal West and setting ablaze two vehicles, as confirmed by officials. The protests, initially ignited by the circulation of disturbing images of two missing students from July, have escalated into a volatile situation.

Reports from the ground indicated confrontations between the protesters and security forces in various areas, including Uripok, Yaiskul, Sagolband, and Tera, prompting the deployment of tear gas shells to regain control. Demonstrators resorted to road blockades, burning tires to obstruct security forces from entering residential zones. The mob's fury culminated in the vandalization of the Deputy Commissioner's office and the torching of vehicles. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel intervened to bring the situation under control.

In response to the escalating unrest, curfew has been reimposed in Imphal East and Imphal West districts to quell the violent protests. Since Tuesday, 65 protesters have sustained injuries during these demonstrations. Meanwhile, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office was set ablaze in Khongjom, Thoubal district, according to Manipur Police. The mob also targeted a police vehicle, set it ablaze, and assaulted a policeman, seizing his weapon.

Authorities have vowed stern action against those involved in such criminal acts and initiated search operations to recover stolen weapons and apprehend the culprits. The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights has urged security forces to exercise restraint and avoid using excessive force on teenagers during the unrest.

Notably, The State has been grappling with caste-based violence, sparked by a tribal unity march on May 3 in the hill districts, opposing the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Tragically, the violence has claimed over 180 lives and left hundreds injured.
