Despite opposition protests earlier in the day, the House was adjourned a third time by Speaker Om Birla, allegedly without any major disruptions at the time of adjournment.

The debate on Operation Sindoor officially began at 3:00 PM, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju appealing for a smooth discussion:

“The Opposition should not attempt to disturb the discussion on Operation Sindoor, and let it happen,” he said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s Statement

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh initiated the government's response during the debate and made several key points.

“S-400, Akash missile system, air defence guns proved to be very useful and completely foiled this attack by Pakistan,” Singh said.

He further clarified the objectives and outcomes of Operation Sindoor. “India paused its action because the pre-decided political and military objectives were achieved. Saying that this operation was paused under any pressure is baseless and absolutely wrong. In my political life, I have always tried not to speak lies ever,” he added.

Describing the defence response, Singh stated, “I am proud to say that our air defence system, counter-drone system, and electronic equipment completely foiled this attack by Pakistan. Pakistan could not hit any of our targets, and none of our important assets were damaged. Our security arrangements were impregnable, and every attack was thwarted.”

On the nature of the Indian response, “On 10th May, when the Indian Air Force struck hard at multiple airfields in Pakistan, Pakistan admitted defeat and offered to cease hostilities. This offer was accepted with the caveat that this Operation has only been paused. If any misadventure occurs from Pakistan's side in the future, this Operation will be resumed.”

He emphasized that the mission was not territorial, “Crossing the border or capturing territory was not the objective of Operation Sindoor. The aim was to eliminate those terror nurseries that Pakistan had nurtured for many years.”

Singh further said, “This Operation was launched to serve justice to those families who lost loved ones in the terror attack. The aim was not to start a war but to force the adversary to bow down. Our armed forces were given complete freedom to choose their targets.”

Responding to opposition questions on Indian losses, he said, “Few members of the Opposition have been asking how many of our aircraft were shot down. I feel their question does not adequately represent our national sentiments. They have not asked how many enemy aircraft our armed forces shot down. The correct question is: Did India destroy terrorist bases? The answer is yes. Were any of our brave soldiers harmed in this operation? The answer is no.”

He also linked the operation to India’s evolving defence strategy, “Our government has made numerous efforts to establish peace with Pakistan. But through the 2016 surgical strikes, the 2019 Balakot air strikes, and now the 2025 Operation Sindoor, we have adopted a different path. The Narendra Modi government's stand is clear: talks and terror cannot go together.”

“A clear message has been given to those who support terrorism that India is resolute in defending its motherland. Let us rise above party differences, taking inspiration from the mantra of ‘Sangachchhadhwam Samvadadhwam’, and stand together,” Singh further said.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s Remarks

During the debate, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi raised questions about the government’s handling of the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 civilians were killed.

“Rajnath Singh ji gave a lot of information, but as Defence Minister, he never mentioned how terrorists from Pakistan reached Pahalgam and killed 26 people. It is our duty to ask questions in the interest of the nation,” Gogoi said.

He also questioned the timeline and sudden ceasefire. “The entire country and the Opposition were supporting PM Modi. Suddenly, on 10th May, we got to know that there had been a ceasefire. Why? We wanted to know from PM Modi that if Pakistan was ready to kneel down, then why did you stop? To whom did you surrender? The US President has said 26 times that he forced India and Pakistan to announce a ceasefire.”

On operational security, he said, “It has been 100 days since the Pahalgam attack, but the government has not been able to catch the five terrorists. You have drones, Pegasus, satellites, CRPF, BSF, CISF – and even the Defence Minister visited – yet the terrorists remain free.”

“It took almost an hour for an ambulance to reach Baisaran, where the attack took place. The army arrived on foot. A mother and her daughter started crying when they saw an Indian soldier, fearing he might be a disguised terrorist. That soldier had to say, ‘I am Indian, you are safe.’ This is the kind of fear that existed,” he added.

He demanded accountability and said, “In the end, who takes the responsibility for the Pahalgam attack? The LG of Jammu and Kashmir? No. If someone needs to take responsibility, it is the Union Home Minister. The Central Government cannot hide behind the LG.”

Gogoi also criticized PM Modi’s post-attack response, saying, “PM Modi came back from Saudi Arabia, but he did not visit Pahalgam. He attended a government programme and a political rally in Bihar. If anyone went to Pahalgam, it was our leader Rahul Gandhi.”

The debate continuous and it was to be held for 16  hour. Tomorrow there will be a discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Operation Sindoor for 16 hours.
