Nimisha Priya’s 13-Year-Old Daughter Reaches Yemen to Appeal for Mother's Release
Kerala Nurse Nimisha Priya, Yemen News: 13-year-old Mishel, daughter of imprisoned Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, has reached Yemen to join Global Peace Initiative founder and evangelist Dr. K.A. Paul in appealing to the Yemeni government for her mother’s release, PTI reported.
Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse, was sentenced to death in 2020 for the alleged murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017. Her execution, which seemed imminent with no signs of reprieve, was postponed further on July 15, following coordinated efforts by Indian authorities and the personal intervention of the Grand Mufti of India, Sheikh Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar.
Mishel, Nimisha’s 13-year-old daughter, arrived in Yemen to support ongoing appeals for clemency.
Earlier, the Indian government had informed the Supreme Court that it had limited capacity to intervene in the matter, citing the absence of diplomatic relations with Yemen, particularly as the prison where Nimisha is held is under the control of the Houthi rebels.
The critical reprieve reportedly came after the Grand Mufti personally reached out to Islamic scholars in Yemen to advocate for Nimisha. At his request, negotiations were initiated between a Sufi scholar’s representative and a member representing the victim’s family, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
In parallel, the Indian government sought additional time to allow Nimisha's family to engage in discussions with the victim’s family, hoping to reach a mutually acceptable resolution.
The ultimate goal of Nimisha’s family remains to avert her execution and secure her safe return to India.
