Beyond the Scars: SC Gives States 4-Week Deadline to Account for Acid Attack Victims

In view of the prevailing situation regarding acid attacks, the Supreme Court of India has directed all states and Union Territories (UTs) to provide exhaustive details regarding such cases within a four-week deadline. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices R Mahadevan and Joymalya Bagchi issued the order on Tuesday, demanding a slew of information to monitor the status of justice and victim support across the country.

The apex court has mandated the submission of year-wise data on the total number of acid attack cases and their current status in trial courts, specifically requesting the number of cases where charge sheets have been filed and those that remain pending or have been decided. Furthermore, the bench sought information regarding appeals filed in appellate courts and various High Courts.

Focusing on survivor welfare, the court required states to provide particulars for each victim, including their academic qualifications, employment, and marital status. Details regarding medical expenses incurred and future treatment costs must also be submitted, along with existing rehabilitation schemes.
