Indian-Origin Man Dies After 8-Hour Wait at Canadian Hospital, MEA Says Canada Must Take Responsibility

On Friday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the death of a 44-year-old Canadian national of Indian origin. He said that while the individual had Indian roots, “the government of Canada should take responsibility in this particular matter,” according to the MEA.

According to local reports, the victim, Prashant Sreekumar, died of a suspected cardiac arrest after waiting for more than eight hours in the emergency room of the Grey Nuns Hospital in southeast Edmonton, Canada. Prashant began experiencing severe chest pains at work on December 22 and was taken to the hospital, where staff reportedly initially told him there was “nothing of significance” and asked him to wait.

According to his father, despite repeated complaints, including Prashant telling him, “Papa, I cannot bear the pain,” the long wait continued. After finally being called into the treatment area, he sat briefly and then collapsed, suffering what appeared to be a cardiac arrest, according to family sources.

The MEA also expressed condolences over the recent shooting death of an Indian doctoral student near the University of Toronto campus, stating that officials are in touch with the family and providing assistance.
