Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey (1/11 Gorkha Rifles)
He showed exceptional leadership and bravery in the Batalik sector. Pandey was renowned for his determination and commitment to the Indian Army besides his ambition from the start to earn the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honor.
During the Kargil War in 1999, his battalion was assigned a crucial mission of clearing enemy positions. Amidst intense enemy fire, he spearheaded multiple assaults on enemy bunkers. Even after sustaining severe injuries, he persisted in leading his troops with steadfast determination. His relentless efforts were pivotal in capturing Jaubar Top and Khalubar Hill. Though he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, his exceptional bravery was honored posthumously with the Param Vir Chakra.
Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey (1/11 Gorkha Rifles)
At the age of 19 years old, he displayed remarkable bravery during the assault on Tiger Hill. Born in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, Yadav was a member of the Ghatak Platoon tasked with capturing crucial enemy bunkers situated on a steep cliff.
As Yadav and his platoon ascended the cliff, they faced intense enemy fire. Despite being struck by multiple bullets, he pressed on, reaching the first bunker and neutralizing the enemy with a grenade. This heroic act allowed his platoon to advance. Yadav then moved on to destroy a second bunker, further crippling the enemy’s defenses. His extraordinary courage and selflessness were recognized with the Param Vir Chakra, making him one of the most celebrated heroes of the conflict.
Rifleman Sanjay Kumar
Rifleman Sanjay Kumar of the 13 JAK Rifles displayed remarkable bravery at Point 4875, embodying an indomitable spirit. Born in March 1976 in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, Kumar volunteered as the leading scout during an assault on a key enemy position. As the attack progressed, heavy enemy fire halted the advance.
Realizing the critical situation, Kumar charged the enemy position despite severe injuries. In intense close-quarters combat, he eliminated several enemy soldiers and captured a machine gun, using it to fire upon the retreating enemy. His fearless actions galvanized his comrades to continue the assault, ultimately securing the position. For his extraordinary valor, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
Major Rajesh Adhikari (18 Grenadiers)
Major Rajesh Adhikari played a crucial role in the capture of Tololing through his exceptional leadership and bravery. Born in December 1970 in Nainital, Uttarakhand, Adhikari led his company in a bold assault on a heavily fortified enemy position. Despite being injured by enemy fire, he continued to lead his troops with strategic precision.
His quick thinking and resolute determination were vital in breaching the enemy’s defenses. Adhikari personally led the charge, engaging in close combat and neutralizing key enemy positions. Though he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, his heroic efforts were honored with the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest military award.
Captain Vikram Batra
Captain Vikram Batra was an Indian Army officer who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest Indian military decoration, for his actions during the Kargil War in 1999. Batra was killed while fighting Pakistani troops around Area Ledge, Point 4875, in the Kargil district of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir.
