The parade also featured a European Union contingent comprising four flag bearers on three gypsies, carrying EU flags.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on Monday said that the display of the flags of the European Union, the EU Military Staff, and its maritime missions, ATALANTA and ASPIDES, at India’s Republic Day celebrations is a powerful symbol of the deepening security cooperation between India and the EU.
“It will culminate tomorrow in the signing of our Security and Defence Partnership,” she added.
Ursula von der Leyen, along with President of the European Council Antonio Luis Santos da Costa, attended the Republic Day celebrations this year as chief guests.
Both leaders are on a three-day state visit to India from January 25 to 27, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Republic Day parade took place along Kartavya Path from Rashtrapati Bhavan to the National War Memorial, under the themes ‘Swatantrata Ka Mantra: Vande Mataram’ and ‘Samriddhi Ka Mantra: Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
