1984 Anti-Sikh Riots: Delhi Court Sentences Sajjan Kumar to Life Imprisonment

The case is part of the long-running legal battle to bring those responsible for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to justice.

Sajjan Kumar 1984 Anti Sikh Riots Case Latest News: In a significant development, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court has awarded a life sentence to former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The verdict was delivered on Monday in a case related to the killing of a father-son duo in the Saraswati Vihar area of Delhi on November 1, 1984.

Kumar was convicted on February 12 under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rioting, unlawful assembly, and murder. The prosecution had argued that Kumar played a key role in inciting violence following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

The case is part of the long-running legal battle to bring those responsible for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to justice. Thousands of Sikhs were killed in the violence that erupted across the country, particularly in Delhi.

This is not the first time Sajjan Kumar has faced legal action for his alleged involvement in the riots. In 2018, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court in another riot-related case but was out on bail in the present matter.

The court’s ruling is seen as a major step in ensuring accountability for the communal violence that took place four decades ago.
