Rahul Gandhi Cuts Short US Visit After Pahalgam Attack, Arrives in Delhi
New Delhi, April 24, 2025 (ANI): Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, returned to New Delhi early on Thursday, cutting short his US visit following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. He was scheduled to attend the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting at 10:30 AM today. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh confirmed the change in Gandhi's travel plans on X.
"Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Shri Rahul Gandhi has cut short his US visit and will be attending in person the CWC meeting in New Delhi tomorrow at 10:30 AM," Ramesh posted on X.
In response to the attack, the Union government is set to convene an all-party meeting later today, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the report said.
The attack on tourists in Pahalgam left at least 28 people dead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had also cut short their trips to Saudi Arabia and the US, respectively.
Meanwhile, India announced strong measures against Pakistan, including suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and closing the integrated checkpost at Attari. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also stated that Pakistani nationals would no longer be permitted to travel to India under the SAARC visa Exemption scheme.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Modi, condemned the attack and expressed condolences. The meeting highlighted the cross-border linkages of the attack. Families of the victims, including Indian Navy Lieutenant Vinay Narwal and that of a local pony operator, Syed Adil Hussain Shah-who was killd while bravely trying to snatch rifle from an attacker in an effort to save tourists mourned their loss and called for strong government action against the perpetrators.
The Pahalgam attack, one of the deadliest since the 2019 Pulwama strike, marked a significant escalation in terrorism in the region following the abrogation of Article 370.
