Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who previously represented Rashid, told Scroll, “The NIA has no material against him.”
Engineer Rashid News: Patiala House Court in Delhi on Saturday granted parole to Baramulla (Jammu and Kashmir) MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, allowing him to attend the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament, news agency ANI reported.
The Budget Session is scheduled to be held from January 28 to April 2. Engineer Rashid has been permitted to attend Parliament on the days when the House is in session during this period.
Counsel for the Baramulla MP, Advocate Nishita Gupta, confirmed to ANI that the court had granted him parole and permission to attend the session.
Rashid has been lodged in Tihar Jail since 2019 in connection with an alleged terror-funding case. The case dates back to 2017, when the National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered an FIR against several separatist leaders in Kashmir, alleging that they had received funding from Pakistan to disrupt peace in India.
Rashid was interrogated by the NIA in October 2017 and was later arrested in 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, according to a detailed report by Scroll.
Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who previously represented Rashid, told Scroll, “The NIA has no material against him.”
Rashid has described the charges against him as “absolutely fake and irrelevant,” according to Scroll.
