Government to Make New Toll Policy Announcement Before April 1 latest news: Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the government is going to launch a national toll policy for highways to give reasonable concessions to commuters. Addressing the BT MindRush 2025 conference in Mumbai, Gadkari said that the policy is prepared and will be out before April 1. Though details are yet unknown, he promised that the new policy would cater to the issue of toll pricing.
In the Lok Sabha, Gadkari spoke of proposals to substitute manual toll collection with an annual pass system, improving efficiency and convenience for users of roads. Further, the transport ministry has called for proposals to introduce an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) FASTag System for barrier-free tolling at a few fee plazas, with scope for expansion depending on its success.
Emphasizing the budgetary prospects, Gadkari pointed out that the toll revenues of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which stand at ₹55,000 crore now, will swell to ₹1.40 lakh crore in two years' time. Gadkari underlined the necessity to speed up investment in infrastructure schemes, which tend to get delayed owing to environment and land acquisition clearances.
The minister also promoted investments in the construction of highways, providing an 8.05% interest rate to mobilize contributions from economically weaker sections, higher than the 4.5% interest rate provided by banks. In addition, he talked about the development of 36 green express highways, which will drastically cut down the cost of logistics and enhance sustainability.
